Questions for this month's rambling blog:
1. How do you obtain your Professional Development?
2. What kind of PD do you prefer?
3. Would you actually do PD if it was to be done on your own time?
4. How would you be held responsible?
5. What does PD Badging look like?
6. How do you put PD badging into action at your school?
Who Loves to sit and listen to somebody ramble on and on about something you could have figured out in 10 minutes on your own? Don't take this all wrong.. Sometimes sit and listen is the only option! As I evaluated myself after spending 2 years doing after school 2 hour trainings, I realized that the majority of my audience would learn more if they had an on-line course to follow about my topic. As I started to put my powerpoints into something worth following and interactive, my teachers really enjoyed reading through them and figuring things out on their own time.
Before creating a PD Badging system my admin asked me several questions. Their biggest fear was if our teachers would actually read the course and watch the materials. Then how would our teachers be held accountable after completing the Badge course. My response to all of this was, we will not know until we give this new concept a try. I encouraged my teachers to complete a minimum of 3 badges of per semester. I offered several incentives as they completed their badges. I helped hold teachers accountable by checking in on them and making sure they fully understood how to use the badge tool or concept the badge was about.
PD Badging allowed my staff to get the PD they needed in a personalized way. Badges allowed my more advanced teachers to grasp the concept in the fast pace way they need. It also allowed my less advanced teachers to take their time and reread the info and watch the videos as many times as they need. The pacing and personalization concept for badging are the 2 main reasons badging went over so well in my corporation.
So, if you wan to put badging into play at your school, my advice would be that YOU HAVE TO START SOMEWHERE. Check out my website and explore some of the badges myself and other tech coaches have created. Feel free to use any resources I have. Keep checking back in for new badges. Your teachers will love the idea of badging.. Contact me if you would like to chat more about PD badging!
